Name: Carlos Melian
Born: Havana, Cuba Live & Work: Chicago, IL Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts, University of Florida, 1979 Master of Fine Arts, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1982 Master of Science, Library and Information Science, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, 1998 My work since 2007 demonstrates a continued path from the previous twenty years with decidedly different materials and methods. A return to painting was my primary concern in 2002 but I could not adopt a formalist approach to picture making. I continued to be involved with “object” making, and hanging (as opposed to standing), even with all the painterly elements and processes that I adopted. My interest is how one object (painting, drawing, panel) relates or compares to another and how simple actions (squaring, halving, hanging, leaning, etc.) generate object(s). The descriptions attached to the titles (all UNTITLED) are mainly verbs to describe how an object or groups of objects are related or created. Exhibitions: 2020 Matter of Fact.
